MIVAN CHOOSES MEDITE MDF FOR MANCHESTER CIVIL JUSTICE CENTRE

16th October 2009 - Medite FR

The new Civil Justice Centre in Manchester is the biggest court complex to be built in the UK since the Royal Courts of Justice in London in the 1870s, and fulfils its demanding brief to provide a sustainable building of civic generosity and European significance. Leader in specialist contracting, Mivan, was responsible for a c£8.5 million interiors contract for Bovis Lend Lease, and it was to Medite that Mivan turned to provide the high quality FSC certified MDF products specified.

Mivan fitted-out the buildings' 12 unique glazed and metal clad pods which house 28 meeting rooms and associated waiting rooms, public and staff toilets to 181 rooms and installed over 950 door-sets. Mivan also manufactured and installed the joinery in 48 court rooms - ranging from standard to super court size - throughout the centre.

Over 3100 sheets (185.6m3) of MDF Premier MDF and around 100 sheets (4.7m3) Medite FR (flame retardant) were required for the project. For over 30 years Medite has pioneered the development of MDF, breaking new ground in technical innovation and setting the benchmarks for quality, consistency and performance. Medite FR is an FSC certified Euro Class B & C MDF panel developed specifically for use in situations where a Euro Class B or a Euro Class C flame retardant board is required under building regulations.

Named as the Building Awards' Project of the Year 2008, the Manchester Civil Justice Centre has scooped numerous other awards for sustainability and sustainable design. Striking features of the building's design include the unusual cantilevering fingers of the building, an 11-storey atrium, a spectacular 63m by 60m cavity glass wall along its western edge and 60m high triangular atrium columns which support the glass façade - all suspended from the atrium roof.
